“Shazam! Fury of the Gods” Will Now Be Released in March 2023

Billy Batson is (finally) back, and he’s having a bit of a superhero crisis in the first trailer for “Shazam! Fury of the Gods.” Warner Bros. premiered the trailer at Comic-Con in July, putting an end to the long wait for more Shazam fun after the first film premiered in 2019 – though as of Aug. 24, the release date has been pushed back yet again. The sequel appears to be every bit as lighthearted and full of laughs as the original, but the stakes are higher this time around as Billy and his newly superpowered family take on their biggest threat yet, so it looks like it’ll be worth the wait.

While DC is keeping mum on the movie’s exact plot for now, the trailer suggests that Billy and his family have angered the old gods. This leads new cast members Lucy Liu and Helen Mirren, who are playing the Daughters of Atlas, to wreak havoc on Earth in retaliation for a group of children stealing powers from ancient gods. “This is very personal, Billy,” Mirren tells Zachary Levi’s Shazam in a scene where he hilariously references the Fast and Furious movies, which also star “The Queen” actor.

Despite the very real threat Billy and his siblings are facing this time around, the sequel appears to be just as cheeky as the original. In addition to the Fast and Furious Easter egg, eagle-eyed fans will be able to spot horror-movie favorite Annabelle in Billy’s pediatrician’s office. Add in a battle with a dragon and a dash of unicorn riding and it becomes clear that “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” wants nothing more than for moviegoers to have a good time.

Ahead, we’ve broken down everything we know about “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” so far, including the trailer, plot details, the cast, and release date.
