Jordan Peele’s next movie might come sooner than we thought. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Peele addressed comments about a potential “Nope” sequel following fan speculation around a character named Nobody, played by “Conan”‘s Michael Busch. “Nope” stars Keke Palmer as Emerald Haywood, Daniel Kaluuya as OJ Haywood, Brandon Perea as Angel Torres, and Steven Yeun as Ricky “Jupe” Park, residents of the rural Agua Dulce area in Southern California, where an otherworldly entity is picking off residents one by one. But in the month since the film premiered, Peele’s fans have set their sights on a character who didn’t even make it into the final cut.

Who Is Nobody in “Nope”?

Nobody, as he’s credited on IMDb, is a mysterious character who only appears in the “Nope” trailer. During a scene on the “Gordy’s Home” set, he can be seen strolling calmly in the opposite direction with his hands in his pockets as the studio audience races from the set amid the chimpanzee’s rampage. Dressed in scrubs and sneakers, it’s unclear exactly what Nobody’s role on the set was or why he was walking in the direction of the attack.

“I’m glad people are paying attention. I do think they will get more answers on some of these things in the future.”

At the end of the scene, Gordy is shot and killed by an unseen gunman, possibly Nobody, who could have been concealing a gun in his jacket. While he wasn’t part of the finished film, glimpses of Nobody in trailers have put fans on his trail, demanding a sequel with more backstory about the enigmatic character.

“People are doing a lot of interesting detective work, is what’s going on,” Peele said when asked about the fan theories. “The story of that character has yet to be told, I can tell you that. Which is another frustrating way of saying, I’m glad people are paying attention. I do think they will get more answers on some of these things in the future. We’re not over telling all of these stories.”

Will There Be a “Nope” Sequel?

The director even snuck a line into the film that hints at a potential follow-up movie. “You know they’re gonna bring us back for the sequel,” Kaluuya says during a scene where OJ and his father are talking about training a horse for an upcoming movie. While some viewers felt the line was Peele’s nod of acknowledgment to “Get Out” fans who have been championing a sequel since the film first premiered in 2017, the line could also be interpreted as a subtle hint that Agua Dulce can expect more eerie incidents to take place in spinoff projects or a sequel.

Peele has yet to confirm whether an actual sequel is in the works, and with details about his future film projects still under wraps, we’ll just have to be patient – like Jupe awaiting the alien monster’s arrival – for more details. In the meantime, take a sneak peek at Busch’s Nobody character in the “Nope” trailer ahead.
