Gabrielle Union Shares Kaavia’s Heartfelt Birthday Toast: “Mommy, You Are Worthy”

Gabrielle Union is opening up about her daughter’s evolving personality. During an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers,” the actor opened up about Kaavia James Union Wade’s impressive knack for performing, and what she’s got planned for the future.

Union revealed that during her birthday trip to Africa with her and Dwyane Wade’s family, 4-year-old Kaavia gave a “full toast” for the special occasion. “It’s late, we’re in Tanzania and she was like, ‘Mommy, you are worthy,'” Union told the host. “I was like, ‘How do you know I struggle with feelings of worthlessness?'” She laughed and shared that her daughter proceeded to deliver an extensive speech during the celebrations. “Any time a microphone comes out, she’s like, ‘Yes, I’d like to have a word.’ . . . And we’re thinking it’s gonna be some cutesy toddler ‘happy birthday,’ but she was like, ‘Uh, and for my third point,'” Union hilariously detailed.

“She’s ready to do press.”

“She had like the dead sea scrolls of points she wanted to make,” she added. “She’s very articulate and she loves to public speak and sing and do all the things. She’s ready to do press.”

With the same warmth and enthusiasm, the “Bring It On” actor also admitted that she’s started planning her – hopefully very distant – funeral. After “going to a lot of bad funerals,” Union said she was inspired to start prepping for the ceremony.

Union noted that her funeral planning was somewhat like wedding planning. Since she and Wade had been to many weddings before theirs, it allowed them to hone in on the vision that they had for their celebrations. “It led me to [think], I feel like I need to plan my funeral down to the smallest detail,” she said. “So I’ve chosen all of the sexiest photos. . . If I die at 88, I don’t want to be 88 on the program. You give me my thirst traps. I’ve got playlists [and] food. I want a good funeral.”
