Fashion Report: Who wore what at the Oscars?

The 95th Academy Awards has arrived and the red carpet sure was glistening with the stars putting their best fashion foot forward. Beginning with the most eye-catching aspect, the carpet was not so “red” as the saying goes as they turned the colour palette into a classy champagne hue. Maximalism was at an all-time high as celebrities went for vivid shades, flamboyant silhouettes, and stellar embellishments – LA’s Dolby Theatre took a detour from their traditional pathway and went for exaggerated style statements indeed.

Beginning with none other than the global superstar that she is – Deepika Padukone was all about a classy bodycon number by Louis Vuitton. This year is all the more special with the actress attending the Oscars as a presenter and making India proud. Probably the most striking feature about her gown was the timeless appeal it exudes – that plunging neckline and perfect fit, further upping the glam quotient was her Cartier crystal neckpiece. Dewy makeup, the neat winged liner, and the messy bun radiated some serious Audrey Hepburn energy.

Ram Charan and Jr NTR twinned in black ethnic outfits, making for a dapper duo. Ram was seen in a custom-made three-piece outfit by Shantanu & Nikhil featuring an asymmetrical kurta, bandh gala jacket, and straight-fitted pants – but the cherry on top was the golden brooch that stole all the limelight. Jr NTR went for a Gaurav Gupta number, he went for a similar bandhgala silhouette with a golden tiger motif on one shoulder while the neckline was more suited to an angrakha style. Truly taking Indian style overseas, these two were at their stylish best.

White was a common colour spotted in most of the wardrobe picks made for the evening. The stunning Emily Blunt and Michelle Williams both went for it, while the former went for a Valentino number with a body-sculpting fit, the latter went for a classic Chanel couture pick. It was generously studded with crystal embroidery coupled with a sheer overlay. Cate Blanchett who had her 8th Academy nomination this year, stunned in a blue velvet gown with an adjoining long satin skirt – spelling elegance in the simplicity that the outfit showcased. Michelle Yeoh of Everything Everywhere All At Once fame was a vision in a white feathered gown by Dior, the diamond accessories were the perfect accents to her ensemble.

Coming to the divas from the music world – Lady Gaga who has had an unquestionable track record of making heads turn with her exceptional style picks, did not disappoint at the Oscars. The music sensation was seen in a Versace sheer corset ensemble with a risque low cut towards the back. She also performed her song Hold My Hand from Top Gun: Maverick. Rihanna went for a sheer black outfit by Alaia, it had minimal cut-outs on the lower half. With a more visible mesh over her baby bump, leather straps, and the red-carpet favourite, floor-sweeping train – she was indeed one of the best-dressed.

As maximalism has been the most trending fashion forecast this year – British actress Florence Pugh got the memo as she arrived in a ruffled gown, pair of black shorts playing peek-a-boo underneath, and a statement-making asymmetrical silver necklace – what a silver lining! Nicole Kidman went for the sultry thigh-high slit gown by Armani also accompanied by floral embellishments.

Corsets, rich colours, ruffles, and boning were a few of the most ported looks for the event. Veering our attention to Mindy Kaling’s Vera Wang gown which had eye-catching boning around the waist. Jamie Lee Curtis’ wore a blush gown with crystal embellishments. Her Dolce and Gabbana gown came with exterior boning which cast a mirage of an inside-out corset.

The men too turned up in style, pulling out outfits from archives and giving modern twists to them. Lenny Karvitz was all about channelling a rock-and-roll vibe as he sported the layered necklace trend on a bare chest and skipped a shirt. Austin Butler too was seen in a Saint Laurent creation featuring a vintage tuxedo with sharp shoulders, a cute bowtie, lapels, and boots. Dwayne Johnson was all about doing the unconventional as he opted for a pink satin jacket with a pink corsage. The incredible Steven Speilberg made a statement in a midnight blue tuxedo. She paired it with sneakers and needless to say, this Gucci look was charming at its best.

Men’s jewellery and embellishments have been creating a storm on the red carpet for quite some time now. Stars like Michael B. Jordan, Brain Tyree Henry, and Daniel Kwan showcased some chic choices in the segments. Michael’s large lapel pins were trendsetting as were Tyree’s starburst buttons that looked rather complementary on the lavender suit. Bright colours had their moment in the sun for sure as Daniel Kwan was seen in a red tuxedo with flattering golden embroidered sleeves.

Eva Longoria was dressed in a Zuhair Murad creation. This sparkling creation came with a plunging neckline and a sheer fabric studded with crystals all across the bodice. Andrew Garfield was as handsome as ever in a Fendi black suit with a classic white shirt. The bow tie and lace shoes were the perfect touches to round up the look. Jennifer Connelly went the classic Louis Vuitton way with her black bodycon gown. The most stunning aspect was the inverted pyramid of rhinestones that made the neckline look gorgeous.

Fashion has always been an inseparable part of the International red carpet as magnanimous as the Oscars, this year was no different. While a lot of people went for vintage looks, some even opted for glamorous extensions of their onscreen characters to the red carpet too. All in all, Oscar’s champagne-hued carpet was bedazzling with stars making some incredible statements, here’s a roundup of our favourites that struck a chord with us. Be it Indian stars on a global platform or International stars – they had their A-game on with custom-made ensembles.
