‘Mr & Mr coming soon’: Aussie football star proposes to boyfriend on the field

Australian footballer Josh Cavallo has announced his engagement after a sweet proposal on the pitch.

The Adelaide United star took to the field at the club’s Coopers Stadium with partner Leighton Morrell before dropping to one knee.

Cavallo posted a series of photos from the on pitch proposal to his Instagram to share the news.

“Starting this year with my fiancé. Mr & Mr Coming soon,” he wrote.

The now 24-year-old came out in 2021, becoming the first openly gay male player in the A-League.

He shared the news in a video on Instagram saying “all I want to do it play football and be treated equally”.

At the time, Cavallo thanked his team Adelaide United for greeting him with “utmost respect and acceptance”.

Cavallo echoed this message of gratitude in his engagement announcement.

“Thank you Adelaide United for helping set up this surprise,” he wrote.

“Your endless support has meant so much to me.

“You have provided a safe space in football, one that I never in my dreams thought could ever be possible, and encouraged me to live every day of my life authentically.”

He continued to share that the decision to have the engagement at the football team’s home stadium was a nod to that endless support. 

“It felt right to share this special moment on the pitch, where it all started,” he wrote.

Thousands of friends, fans and colleagues reacted with excitement to the couple’s announcement.

“Congratulations Josh! What a journey it’s been, so so happy for you! It’s just the beginning,” wrote athlete and media personality Michael Gunning.

“Oh, you beautiful boys. Such phenomenal news. Congratulations. Sending much love you both,” wrote tv presenter and filmmaker Steve Pennells.

Adelaide United also responded to the post commenting three love heart emojis.
