‘I’ve experienced both sides of the coin’: Rebel Wilson’s tragic realisation after weight loss

Four years ago, Rebel Wilson announced that 2020 would be her “year of health”.

She donned her activewear and hit the pavement publicly committing to a weight loss journey to improve her health. Over the course of a year, she slowly lost weight to “drastically change” for the better and assist her fertility journey, she has now told People.

The Pitch Perfect actor set out on this journey in the interest of her health but it also gave rise to a major shift in the way people viewed her.

Speaking to People, she explained that her new look garnered more attention than any of her career highlights ever had.

“I was getting quite a lot of attention for the weight loss,” she told People.

“I thought, ‘Gosh, people are so intrigued by this.’ Literally, I got more attention for weight loss than any movie I’d ever done.”

On top of the growing attention, Wilson shared that people began to treat her differently. She told People that she noticed people would pay her more positive attention in public, even holding doors open for her.

“I know that’s superficial, but it was nice. And I went, ‘Oh, is this what hot people experience all the time?’ Their life must be so bloody blessed,” she laughed.

Before her weight loss, Wilson explained that she felt a part of her was hidden.

“It was interesting to know exactly what it’s like to be invisible sexually and then to be visible,” she said. “I’ve experienced both sides of the coin.”

Despite the shifting perception, Wilson shares that her weight loss journey was about so much more than fitting into a smaller dress size or adhering to conventional standards of beauty but about approaching life with a healthier mindset.

It is this message that was part of the inspiration for her soon-to-be-released book Rebel Rising.

“People often think that there’s some magic pill, or some sick special diet, or exercise regime or whatever,” the Senior Year star said.

She hopes her book can “give people the message, if they’re like me and an emotional eater, that it’s not about that stuff. It’s literally about working at a healthier way to deal with your emotions, and there is no magic solution.”

“And then maybe me telling my story might encourage them to do the same and make healthy change in their lives,” she continued.

Wilson’s book is due to be released in Australia on April 3.
