Emma Stone has revealed a couple of years ago she had a “freak out” over being called Emma, and asked people to call her by her real name.
The topic came up during an interview she did with The Hollywood Reporter alongside her The Curse costar, Nathan Fielder.
The actor paused the interview with the publication to explain why he wouldn’t be calling her Emma during the chat.

“Before we continue, I’d like to say something,” he started.
“Her name’s Emily, but she goes by Emma professionally. So when there’s people that don’t know her, I end up saying Emma. But I’m going to just say Emily from here on.”
Stone explained that she changed her name to Emma Stone professionally because her real name was taken by another actress.
”Then I freaked out a couple of years ago,” she admitted. “For some reason, I was like, “I can’t do it anymore. Just call me Emily.”
The Oscar-winning actress was asked if she would correct a fan for calling her Emily.
“No. That would be so nice,” she said. “I would like to be Emily.”
In a previous interview on Live with Kelly and Ryan, Stone revealed that she actually tried out a different name before settling on Emma.

”First I changed it to Riley for a minute,” she told the hosts. “It’s a very cool name, I was not cool enough to pull off the name Riley. You know, you give a 16-year-old license to change their name and they’ll go for it.
“So, I pretty quickly had an identity crisis and I was like, ‘Emma is much closer to Emily than Riley is’, and I’ve been Emma ever since.”
She explained that she was Riley for around two or three months before changing it.
In that time, Stone had a guest role on Malcolm In The Middle where they would refer to her as Riley and she wouldn’t even realise they were speaking to her.

“It was not a good idea,” she said of the original name change. “[Riley] was so not my name.”
