Bruce Willis’ wife reached out for support following star’s dementia diagnosis

Bruce Willis’ wife Emma Heming Willis has spoken about the support she received after the family publicly disclosed the actor’s dementia diagnosis.

Heming Willis, 45, was speaking at the AFTD 2024 Education conference on May 3 when she made the comments.

A clip of her appearance has been shared on the AFTD’s social media accounts and was later reposted by Heming Willis.

”I could breathe. I could really exhale and sort of just feel this weight lift from my shoulders,” she said.

“But everything changed for the better once we were able to disclose his diagnosis. I was able to seek the support that I so desperately needed for my husband, for our whole family.”

Heming Willis later reposted the video to her own accounts, writing: “My mission is to raise as much awareness of FTD as I can. My goal? To one day see a treatment and cure.”

Bruce Willis’s shared that the actor had been diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia (FTD) in 2023.

She spoke of the actor always having found “joy in life” and helping “everyone to do the same”.

“It has meant the world to see that sense of care echoed back to him and to all of us.

“We have been so moved by the love you have all shared for our dear husband, father, and friend during this difficult time,” they said at the time.

“Your continued compassion, understanding, and respect will enable us to help Bruce live as full a life as possible,” the family concluded.

The actor has been supported by his wife of 16 years and their children Mabel Ray Willis and Evelyn Penn Willis, as well as ex-wife Demi Moore and their children Scout Willis, Rumer Willis and Tallulah Belle Willis.

Since the family’s announcement they have shared updates on the actor’s health.

On March 3, Heming Willis addressed reports her husband was no longer enjoying a quality of life.

“The headline basically says there is no more joy in my husband. Now, I can just tell you, that is far from the truth,” she said in a video shared on March 3.

“I need society – and whoever’s writing these stupid headlines – to stop scaring people.

“Stop scaring people to think that once they get a diagnosis of some kind of neurocognitive disease that that’s it. ‘It’s over. Let’s pack it up. We’re — Nothing else to see here. We’re done.’ No.”

She explained that while there is “grief and sadness” there’s also love, connection, joy and happiness.
