Sophie Turner addressed the coffee cup scandal in a new interview for Vogue.

For those who don’t remember, the internet exploded in 2019 when eagle-eyed fans spotted a modern, disposable coffee cup casually sitting in the middle of Winterfell in episode four of season eight.

Though the cup was placed in front of Daenerys, played by Emilia Clarke, it was unclear if she or one of the other actors in the big ensemble scene had left it there when cameras started rolling.

Naturally, long-time viewers of the fantasy epic lost their minds.

How could such an obvious error slip past the actors, the crew on set, the props department, the director, and even the post-production team, who could have easily edited it out of the shot?

Those were the same questions the cast asked themselves after the episode aired.

“I think it was slightly embarrassing that none of us noticed it,” Turner confessed. “It was quite glaringly obvious.

“It caused quite a bit of controversy on set, actually […] we were all kind of pointing fingers at each other.”

Some fans blamed Turner, with photos emerging of her holding a similar cup on the Winterfell set. Jimmy Fallon took her to task over the allegations on his show soon after.

“Alright, Detective Pikachu,” the actress responded on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, before pointing out the photo was from a totally different scene.

Sophie Turner reacted to the claims on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in 2019.

“So why am I holding this coffee cup that’s in a different scene? We all have the same cups for all of our water and tea and everything.

“Look who it’s placed in front of […] Emilia Clarke, she’s the culprit!”

Months after the episode aired, Clarke claimed co–star Conleth Hill, who played Lord Varys in all eight seasons, was behind the blunder.

“He said, ‘I think it was [mine], I am sorry, darling. I didn’t want to say anything because it seemed the heat was very much on you,'” she revealed on Tonight With Jimmy Fallon in 2019.

While tensions were high behind the scenes, US streaming service HBO Max (now Max) tried to play it off.

“The latte that appeared in the episode was a mistake. Daenerys had ordered an herbal tea,” it joked on social media.

Streaming services raced to digitally remove the coffee cup from the episode and it was gone from the scene just two days later, but a meme had been born.

In the weeks that followed, Twitter (now X), Facebook, Reddit and Instagram were awash with jokes about the cup, complete with endless screenshots of the mistake that the team behind the show really should have caught.

Many longtime fans claimed the coffee cup blunder was symbolic of bigger issues with Game of Thrones‘ production as the show wore on, with many fans disappointed with the final seasons’ lack of thematic continuity and questionable writing.

Even now, five years later, it’s easy to find stills and clips from the original version of season eight, episode four, with the coffee cup in all its glory.
