‘Spun out of context’: Olivia Culpo responds to wedding dress criticism

Olivia Culpo has responded to criticism she received after comments about her wedding dress choice were “spun out of context”.

The former Miss Universe married San Francisco 49ers footballer Christian McCaffey last month opting for a conservative, long-sleeved Dolce and Gabbana wedding dress.

Of the style decision, the Culpo Sisters star told Vogue before the big day that she “didn’t want to exude sex in any way, shape or form.”

After her wedding, online criticism about her choice of dress was rife, with one stylist taking to her verified account gowneyedgirl claiming Culpo’s comments to Vogue pushed an agenda “of what she thinks all brides should look like”.

When she learnt of the backlash, Culpo “was definitely very surprised,” she told People in a recent interview.

“I feel like I personally like to gives people the benefit of the doubt. And unfortunately, I feel like the words I said were spun out of context to fit an agenda that I did not have.”

The model said her style choices came down to one thing.

“I wanted to feel like myself in every sense of the word,” she told People.

“And I think that that’s where my decision to be more pared down came in.”

For the big day, Culpo was covered head to toe in a long-sleeved white crepe ball gown that featured a high neck and a voluminous skirt.

Despite the backlash, Culpo is happy with her dress choice, sharing: “The choices that I made are because I wanted to feel like they’re choices I could be proud of in 50 years. And that’s it.”

Culpo’s response comes as fellow newlywed Eva Amurri took to her blog to call out online criticism she received for her wedding style choices.

Amurri, who received backlash for the way her body looked in her low-cut dress, compared her experience to Culpo’s to highlight an unfair double standard at play.

“Two women got married on the same day clothed vastly differently, and neither was ‘right’. Neither was good enough,” she wrote.

With this kind of commentary being a sad reality in the online world, Culpo’s biggest piece of advice for future brides is to ignore the opinions of others and “stay true to yourself”.

“Stick to the vision you have in your head and don’t worry about anything else,” she told People.

“No matter what you wear, no matter what your decisions are from your makeup to your hair, to the gown, you will look absolutely beautiful because its a beautiful day”.
