‘Very distressing’: Lily Allen reveals she’s received death threats after admitting she rehomed her puppy

Singer Lily Allen has hit back after copping backlash for admitting she rehomed a puppy after it ate three of her family’s passports.

The Smile hitmaker, 39, shared a lengthy statement on her Instagram stories on Sunday, revealing she’s received ”death threats”

Allen insisted she’s “never been accused of mistreating an animal” and “found this whole week very distressing”.

Allen slammed the media coverage of her admission, which she made on her podcast, and claimed people slamming her online haven’t listened to what she said.

“‘We tried very hard and for a very long time but the passports were the straw that broke the camel’s back. This is the part of the podcast the tabloids decided not to quote in their articles about me ‘dumping my puppy’,” she said.

“People have been furiously reacting to a deliberately distorted cobbling together of quotes designed to make people angry and as a result, I’ve received some really abhorrent messages including death threats, some of the most disgusting comments have been all over my social media channels.”

She added in part of her post: “I’m ok but it has been a really tough few days that has impacted me and my family.”

Allen provided more background to what happened with the pup, revealing the dog named Mary developed “severe separation anxiety and would act out”.

She said they rescued the dog from a shelter in New York and worked with the shelter to help the puppy adjust to their home. The pooch also had three walks a day, a dog sitter from the shelter and a behaviour specialist and professional trainer.

“We loved her very much,” Allen said.

“After many months and much deliberation, everyone was in agreement that our home wasn’t the best fit for Mary… We couldn’t meet Mary’s needs and her happiness and welfare were central to us making that decision, as difficult as it was.”

She said Mary was rehomed shortly after to someone who was “known to us”.

Allen made headlines after telling the story on her podcast, Miss Me?.

“We actually did adopt a dog together already, but then it ate my passport. And so I took her back to the home,” she said in part of the episode.
