American musician Nick Gravenites, known for hits including Born in Chicago, has died at the age of 85, it has been confirmed.
His family confirmed the sad news via his official Facebook page.
“I regret to inform you all that Nick passed away last night,” the post read.
“Details to follow as they arrive,” it continued.

“The Gravenites family appreciates all of the fans and loved ones who have been there for us during this difficult time,” it finished.
Fans and followers flocked to send his family condolences underneath the post.
“I’m so sorry for your loss. Nick was a legend and powerful musical force,” one wrote.
“Condolences and gratitude for a legacy and lifetime of blues music!” another added.

According to Deadline, the musician died on Wednesday following “many months of failing health”.
A crowdfunding page was set up for Gravenites before his death and around $US16,000 was raised.
“At age 85 he needs help with mounting expenses. Please support this unique musician who has given all of us the gift of so much great music,” the page read.
“Great musicians like Nick are no longer financially compensated for anything close to their worth,” it added.

He was a founding member of The Electric Flag and played in clubs in the 1960s.
Throughout his career, the Chicago-born star wrote songs for the late Janis Joplin. He also worked closely with late musician John Cipollina.
The late rocker is survived by his family, including wife Marcia and their child.
