Gwyneth Paltrow on the biggest mistake she made in the first year of marriage to husband Brad Falchuk

Gwyneth Paltrow has admitted to making a major mistake during her first year of her marriage to husband Brad Falchuk.

The couple made the choice to live apart for the first year after tying the knot, thinking it was the best choice for each of their two children.

“I think at the time, we really felt like we were doing the right thing,” Paltrow, 52, said, on the most recent episode of her Goop podcast.

“We were trying to kind of land the plane very, very gently and slowly and get everybody on board.”

“But I’m not sure that it didn’t just prolong that thing of like, we don’t know what we’re doing. What do you think?”

Paltrow was joined by her husband for the episode, and the pair agreed living apart for that first two year gave their children “too much power” and living together from the beginning would have provided more stability.

“I think them having agency is really important,” he continued. “But power, to actually keep these two adults from living together? I think it made them more uncomfortable and more like, ‘OK, this is not something that is solid.'”

Paltrow and Falchuk tied the knot in 2018 after four years of dating, having met on the set of Glee on which Paltrow was guest starring. Falchuk co-created the hit TV show.

Each brought two children to the union from their previous marriages. Paltrow shares daughter Apple, 21, and son Moses, 19, with former husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin. Falchuk is dad to Isabella, 19, and Brody, 18 from his previous marriage.

Both admitted to making mistakes early on in their marriage but said they now have a wonderful blended family, having learned as they went along.

Paltrow spoke of her struggle to bond with Falchuk’s daughter Isabella, with the pair ultimately forging a strong bond.

“I was just going to be that presence for her. Always loving and forgiving in the face of, if she acted up. And always show her that I was so there for her that she would not question my intentions,” Paltrow said of ultimately repairing their relationship.

Paltrow said on the podcast “as cheesy as it sounds love is always the answer”.

“I’m so incredibly grateful to your kids for that,” she said. “I feel like they really helped me understand what the point of all this is.”
