The issue became particularly sensitive this year because of Usher’s comments about Combs following the latter’s criminal conviction. In a March 2026 interview with Forbes, Usher was asked about his former mentor and said he had “nothing negative to say” about Combs because his personal experience was different from what the public had seen. He praised Combs’ influence on hip-hop and Black entrepreneurship, described him as a mentor and said, “that’s why I see him as legacy.” He also added, “I put respect on his name.”
In 2014, Brown pleaded guilty to a separate misdemeanour assault charge involving a man outside a Washington hotel. In July 2026, he pleaded guilty in the UK to affray relating to a 2023 nightclub incident involving music producer Abraham Diaw. More serious assault charges were dropped after the plea, and Brown is due to be sentenced in October.
