Riverdale star Ryan Grantham is currently in court for killing his mother, which he reportedly did to prevent her from seeing him attempt to assassinate Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Grantham, 24, played Jeffery Augustine in the CW series, and has pled guilty to second-degree murder of his 64-year-old mother, Barbara Waite. He was initially charged with first-degree murder.
According to multiple media outlets, the court heard that Grantham was contemplating killing others, and had printed out a map of Trudeau’s Ottawa residence, Rideau Cottage, and allegedly was planning to kill the Prime Minister.
Per an agreed statement of facts, Grantham told police at the time: “I was in a rush and he was the only person I could think of, the most important person in Canada. Like, I could do something to make an impact.”
Barbara was, the court heard, playing the piano when her son shot at her and killed her on March 31, 2020.
Prosecutors from British Columbia said at the sentencing this week that Grantham wanted “to save his parent” from seeing him attempt to murder Trudeau.
“My mother was a caring, compassionate, loving person,” Grantham told the British Columbia Supreme Court this week.
“She did nothing to deserve what I did to her.
“In the face of something so horrible, saying sorry almost seems pointless. But from every fibre of my being, I am sorry.”

According to Canadian news outlet CBC, after Grantham allegedly killed his mother by shooting her in the back of her head, he covered her body with a sheet, and placed candles and rosaries around her.
Prosecutors, however, said Grantham acted with “something other than altruism.”
Prosecutor Michaela Donnelly said in the sentencing hearing, “Mr. Grantham was seeking to save his mother from something he was going to do.”
Donnelly described the murder as a “devastating breach of trust.”
“Barbara Waite loved her son very much, was an excellent parent and in her mind had no reason to fear him,” Donnelly said.
Per CBC, Grantham recorded a video of himself quietly approaching his mother with a gun from behind prior to the alleged shooting, using a GoPro.
The prosecution also presented two psychiatric evaluations to the court, which concluded that Grantham allegedly killed his mother to spare her from witnessing any further acts of violence.
Sentencing hearings for Grantham concluded on Wednesday local time but the judge still has to discuss a prison term, though prosecutors have asked for Grantham to serve at least 17 to 18 years in jail before being considered for parole.
Grantham has also starred in iZombie, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus in addition to Riverdale.
