‘I’ve worked very hard to heal’: Jena Malone says she was sexually assaulted by co-worker while filming The Hunger Games

Actress Jena Malone has recalled the bittersweet moments she experienced while filming The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 back in 2015.

While the 38-year-old said she was grateful for having a role in the blockbuster franchise, she said she was dealing with a rollercoaster of emotions at the time as she was sexually assaulted by someone she worked with on the movie.

And it’s only now she’s been able to heal and process what happened to her all those years ago while filming on location in Paris.

Producers John Kilik, Nina Jacobson, actors Jena Malone, Liam Hemsworth, Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, director Francis Lawrence, actress Willow Shields attend the world premiere of the film 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2' at CineStar on November 4, 2015 in Berlin, Germany.

“Even [though] this time in Paris was extremely hard for me , was going thru a bad break up and also was sexually assaulted by someone I had worked with , I was so full of gratitude for this project, the people I became close with and this amazing part I got to play,” she wrote on Instagram, as she shared a throwback photo taken in the French countryside shortly after filming wrapped.

“A swirling mix of emotions I’m only now just learning to sort thru. I wish it wasn’t tied to such a traumatic event for me but that is the real wildness of life I I guess. How to hold the chaos with the beauty.”

Malone – who played Johanna Mason in two films in the franchise alongside Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth – said that while it’s difficult to reflect on that period in her life, she’s proud of what the films have become.

She stopped short of naming the person who allegedly assaulted her, only describing them as “someone I worked with”.

“I’ve worked very hard to heal and learn thru restorative justice, how to make peace with the person who violated me and make peace with myself,” Malone continued.

“It’s been hard to talk about the hunger games and Johanna Mason without feeling the sharpness of this moment in time but I’m ready to move thru it and reclaim the joy and accomplishment I felt.”

The actress then offered her time and sympathy to other survivors, urging them to get in touch if they need someone to talk to.

“Lots of love to you survivors out there. The process is so slow and non linear,” she concluded. “I want to say I’m here for anyone who needs to talk or vent or open uncommunicated spaces within themselves. Please DM me if you need a safe space to be heard.”
