ASAP Rocky Celebrates His, Rihanna’s Son RZA’s 1st Birthday: Photos

Time to party! ASAP Rocky celebrated his and Rihanna‘s son RZA’s 1st birthday — and confirmed the origin of the little one’s name.

The ASAP Mob rapper, 34, took to Instagram on Saturday, May 13, to pay tribute to his baby with a slideshow of photos and videos from RZA’s first year of life.

“‘WU TANG IZ 4 DA CHUREN 🤲’ HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY TO MY 1st BORN . RZA❤,” Rocky (real name Rakim Mayers) captioned the carousel of images and clips, confirming that RZA was named after Wu-Tang Clan frontman Robert Fitzgerald Diggs, who goes by RZA.

Peppered into the pictures and videos were snaps of RZA with his parents, including two sweet mirror selfies. In one, the little boy was cradled in his dad’s arm as he watched Rocky shave. In another, Rihanna, 34, held RZA in her arms as the “Praise the Lord” rapper quickly took the photo. In one particularly sweet clip, Rocky held RZA up to the camera to get some adorable close-ups of their son. The New York native concluded the post with footage of Ol’ Dirty Bastard uttering the iconic sentiment, “Wu-Tang Clan is for the children.”

Rocky’s sweet tribute to his son comes days after RZA’s name was first revealed. According to RZA’s birth certificate, which was obtained by the Daily Mail on Thursday, May 11, the baby’s full name is RZA Athelston Mayers. He shares the same middle and last name as his father.

Rihanna — who is currently pregnant with her and Rocky’s second child — gave birth to RZA in May 2022, Us Weekly confirmed at the time.

“I wouldn’t say [we were] planning [to start a family],” the “Diamonds” singer told Vogue in the family’s cover story that month. “But certainly not planning against it. I don’t know when I ovulate or any of that type of s–t. We just had fun. And then it was just there on the test.”

Since becoming a mom, Rihanna has found a new purpose in life.

“I’m living for my son. Everything matters now. You really start to take a lot into account,” the “Umbrella” artist revealed on the “Process with Nate Burleson” podcast in February. “Skydiving?! You really think about stuff like that — it’s not worth it. Everything is different, life before my son seems very obscure. It’s very small and cloudy, it just got better with him. It’s so much hard work but nothing is more fulfilling than that.”

That same month, the Fenty Beauty founder revealed she and Rocky were expecting their second child by debuting her baby bump during her performance at the Super Bowl LVII halftime show.

Nearly three months later, the proud parents closed down the 2023 Met Gala red carpet, where the “Bitch Better Have My Money” singer once again showed off her growing bump, this time in a white Valentino gown.

In November 2022, Rihanna explained why she and Rocky had yet to publicly reveal RZA’s name.

“We just didn’t get around to it yet, really,” she told The Washington Post at the time. “We’ve just been living. But I guess there’s a certain freedom that comes with kind of just like getting it out there.”
