‘Something private’: Gilmore Girls star Kelly Bishop opens up on abortion she had in her thirties

Gilmore Girls star Kelly Bishop is revealing all in her upcoming memoir, called The Third Gilmore Girl.

The private star, 80, who portrayed matriarch Emily in the hit TV series, has opened up in the book about having an abortion in her thirties – explaining she’s grateful she had the option to choose how to proceed when she got pregnant.

“It was such a relief just knowing that that option was there,” she said, according to People.

“That’s something private that I just was not going to put in until the Supreme Court got rid of Roe v. Wade,” she said. Roe v. Wade legalised abortion in the United States, but it was recently overturned.

The actress, who also starred in Dirty Dancing, added: “Of course, it never had occurred to me that I would accidentally get pregnant… But the fact that that was available and legal, it was just a relief.”

Bishop revealed that she always knew that she never wanted children of her own – but is a stepmother.

She told Bustle: “She would talk to me like a regular girlfriend her age, and I sometimes look back and think, “My goodness, I learned a lot of things I was probably too young to learn.”

“But I seemed to be sophisticated enough to handle them.”

She added she’s still close to on-screen daughter Lauren Graham, saying: “The only people these days from Gilmore Girls I socialise with on any sort of regular basis [are creator] Amy [Sherman-Palladino] and Lauren Graham.”
