At an event celebrating his three-decade-long career in the film industry, Aamir Khan revealed that he was originally offered the iconic role of the antagonist in the 1993 film Darr. However, as we know, the role ultimately went to Shah Rukh Khan. Aamir got candid while interacting with audiences at the launch of Cinema Ka Jadugar, a film festival that will see Aamir Khan’s films re-releasing in the theatres.
Aamir shared, “I was going to do Darr, but then I opted out of it for other reasons. It is very well made. Shah Rukh Khan was perfectly suited for the role. The soul Yash ji was trying to put in the film through me…If I was doing it, it would have gone wrong. I don’t regret not doing it.”

Darr went on to become a pivotal role in Shah Rukh Khan’s career. The film, which also featured Juhi Chawla and Sunny Deol in key roles, earned him high praise and put him on the map as an antagonist. His portrayal of the obsessive Rahul remains one of his most spine-chilling performances.
The event was also attended by Javed Akhtar. Heaping praise on Aamir, he shared, “Aamir’s magic is that he puts his money on unconventional films. I asked him not to do Lagaan. Tried convincing him a lot. Made a list of what all could go wrong. He made a list and made a script with all those things.”
Ashutosh Gowariker’s Lagaan earned critical acclaim not just in India but also internationally. The film was nominated at the Oscars in the Best Foreign Language Film category.
Aamir Khan’s curated film festival will feature his slate of films including Dangal, Lagaan, 3 Idiots, Hum Hain Rahi Pyar Ke, Andaaz Apna Apna, Raja Hindustani, Ghajini, Taare Zameen Par and more.
