Lata Didi Was The Biggest Feminist- Shreya Ghoshal Pays a Moving Tribute to Lata Mangeshkar

In an evening steeped in nostalgia, Shreya Ghoshal paid a musical tribute to the late legend Lata Mangeshkar with a special concert titled Letters to Lata Didi in Mumbai. The two-and-a-half-hour-long show celebrated the extraordinary legacy of the iconic singer whose voice defined generations of Indian cinema.

Shreya performed more than 50 songs from Mangeshkar’s vast discography.

Opening the concert with the timeless Aayega Aanewala, Shreya set the tone for the evening with one of Lata’s most celebrated songs. Over the next two and a half hours, she performed several beloved classics such as Aaja Re Pardesi, Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh, Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya, Rangeela Re, Aaj Phir Jeene Ki Tamanna Hai, Hothon Mein Aisi Baat, Baahon Mein Chale Aao and Tere Bin Jiya Jaye Na.

Acknowledging the emotional weight of the tribute, Shreya said, “Aaj ki yeh shaam mere liye sabse khaas, most important, sentimental and emotionally close to my heart evening hai. Aur main shayad kitni bhi tayari kar loon, aaj ke din ki tayari poori nahi hai. I think you will sense my vulnerability and my emotion today. We are all here celebrating the legacy of Maa Saraswati, hamari pyari Lata Didi. This tribute is from all of us fans, from the musicians and me. I am sure Didi is smiling upon us from the heavens.”

The concert also featured video tributes from people who had worked with Lata Mangeshkar over the decades. Messages poured in from several eminent personalities, including singer Nitin Mukesh, composer Anandji Shah, lyricist Prasoon Joshi, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar, commentator Harsha Bhogle and music producer Prakash Peters.
During the show, Shreya also reflected on the impact Lata Mangeshkar had on her as a young singer and spoke about the values the legendary artist embodied. Calling Lata “the biggest feminist,” Shreya said the singer inspired generations not just musically but personally.


Shreya said,“She has inspired us not just as a musician but also as a human being, living by her own terms. She gave us a sense of purpose. Aisi kitni auratein thi 40s, 50s and 60s ke daur mein jinhone itna kuch iconic kiya.”
Midway through the concert, singer Javed Ali joined Shreya on stage for a special segment. The two performed duets, including Woh Hai Zara Khafa Khafa, Yeh Dil Tum Bin and Ehsaan Tera Hoga Mujh Par.


Shreya also shared a personal memory of meeting Lata Mangeshkar for the first time at the singer’s studio. Recalling the moment, she said she was left completely speechless upon seeing Lata.
Several prominent personalities attended the concert, including Usha Mangeshkar and other members of the Mangeshkar family, Nitin Mukesh, Anandji Shah and Shantaben, Sonu Nigam, Prasoon Joshi, former cricketer Virender Sehwag and Anjali Tendulkar.
The concert closed with some of Lata Mangeshkar’s emotional songs, including Luka Chupi, Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon and Lag Ja Gale. As Shreya finished the final notes, she grew visibly emotional and broke down on stage.
After her performance, she invited Usha Mangeshkar and other members of the family on stage, felicitating her with flowers and seeking her blessings.
