With Meghna Gulzar’s Daayra soon to be released in theatres, the cast of the film is now expressing their personal experiences during the entire shoot.
Prithviraj Sukumaran hails from the state of Kerala, tagging along decades of experience. Daayra is one of several projects he has worked on in Bollywood, including prominent films like Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and Naam Shabana, among others.
When asked about the differences he felt between the Malayalam cinema industry and Bollywood, he had a few points holstered. Prithviraj Sukumaran said, “I think it’s how informal we are as an industry. Our bag is light compared to Bollywood.”
The Malayalam cinema industry has been growing exponentially due to the immersive narratives their movies carry. But another surprising fact about the industry is how informal their approach is to the process of making films. He said, “Even while attempting these big films, there’s an informal way Malayalam films are made. That approach brings a tangible, humane element to the cinema we make.”
He goes on to give an example to further cement his point. He continued, “If I wanted to make a film with Kareena, as a director, I’d just call her and say, “Hi, I’d like to make a film with you. I can narrate the script.””
Comparing it to Bollywood, he added, “I’ve learnt that you have to call the agency. The agency will then speak to the manager assigned to you, and the manager will convince you to take the meeting with the director. If it’s someone like Meghna, it doesn’t take too much convincing. So, it’s all very corporate. I guess it works. But I think there’s an easier way to do things.”
