Aubrey Plaza slams idea next Bond can’t be a woman: ‘Who says that?’

Aubrey Plaza is proudly kicking butt in her new action movie and says she hopes it inspires James Bond producers to look at women to take over the famed role.

The White Lotus star plays special agent Sarah Fidel in the new Guy Ritchie movie Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre, alongside actor Jason Statham, who plays Orson Fortune.

“Bond can be a woman! Who says Bond can’t be a woman?,” Plaza tells 9Honey Celebrity over Zoom.

“I consider Sarah Fidel kind of like a female Bond character. That’s kind of what I thought going into the movie, so maybe this movie will change people’s mind.” 

When Daniel Craig left the iconic action hero role in 2021, after 15 years, there was speculation and controversy over whether a woman could take over the famed role.

Bond producer Barbara Broccoli seemingly put the issue to bed, telling The Hollywood Reporter she doesn’t believe that it’s the right move.

“I don’t think a woman should play James Bond […] I believe in making characters for women and not just having women play men’s roles,” she said in a 2021 interview, adding her only stipulation for the next 007 is that they’re British but that can be any race or ethnicity.

In Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre Plaza’s character does just that, holding her own among the boys.

Fidel is one of special agent Orson Fortune’s team of operatives who recruit Hollywood star Danny Francesco (played by Josh Hartnett) to take part in an undercover operation, which requires them to befriend arms dealer Greg Simmonds (played by Hugh Grant).

“She was very fun to play,” Plaza says of her character.

“Jason’s character is more kind of ‘I don’t like people with a sense of humour’ and then I get to go in and be crazy, and it was fun – I was just trying to poke him the whole time trying to make him laugh, trying to make all of them laugh and I got to do action, which was fun – l got to shoot at the bad guys.”

The movie was filmed in Turkey back in early 2021 and the American actress tells 9Honey Celebrity she was excited to get in on the stunt action in the dramedy.

“[I had] No training whatsoever, they just threw me out there,” she jokes.

“It was mental training really but I was game for whatever. Of course we had stunt people but I was very excited to get a shot at doing some real stunts.

“Josh and I got to do some driving stuff, which was really, really fun… I learned how to shoot a gun out of a moving vehicle while it’s making donuts – that was something I never thought I’d learn how to do but if I ever have to do that in my real life, now I will be able to do that, so I’m very happy about that.”

Speaking about the reinvigorated love for and consumption of the spy movie genre by audiences around the world, the Parks and Recreations actress they’re “just classic” because “they’re so fun”.

“I think having a character like Orson Fortune, someone that you just know is always going to win in the end and has all the skills, it’s just aspirational and fun to watch a character like that,” she says.

“And also, there’s a sense of humour about it, he doesn’t take himself too seriously and I think that’s what people love about all the Bond movies too. It’s just fun to watch.”

Operation Fortune: Ruse de guerre is in cinemas around Australia on January 12.
