‘Hard to explain how important he was’: Tributes pour in for Big Bang Theory star Bob Newhart, who has died aged 94

The entertainment world is mourning the loss of Hollywood icon, Bob Newhart.

The comedian and actor, who starred in two hit television shows that bore his name, Elf, Big Bang Theory and Catch 22, has died aged 94.

Tributes have been pouring in for the “truly one-of-a-kind” talent after his publicist confirmed Newhart had died following a series of short illnesses.

“Second most important man in my life,” his ’80s sitcom Newhart co-star Julia Duffy wrote in a tribute posted to X. “Glad they’re together but I feel so alone now. #RIPBOB. How I will miss being teased. I love you.”

Duffy shared her tribute, which also referenced the loss of her son, alongside a cast photo from Newhart, in which she starred as Stephanie Vanderkellen..

Mark Hamil of Star Wars fame also took to the platform to share his condolences.

“From his groundbreaking stand-up to his two classic sitcoms he gave us a lifetime of laughter,” he wrote alongside an image of Newhart.

“Truly one-of-a-kind. Thank you Bob Newhart! #RIP

Bill Prady, the co-creator of The Big Bang Theory – in which Newhart appeared as Professor Proton from 2013 to 2018 – shared just how much of a delight the comedian was to work with.

“Hard to explain how important Bob Newhart was to every comedian and comedy writer who came after him,” Prady wrote in tribute, posting a photo of the pair smiling together.

“Working with him ever so briefly was one of the greatest joys and honors of my life.”

Other tributes have flown in from celebrities, journalists and others who had the pleasure of meeting Newhart.

“What a life. Rest in peace, Bob Newhart,” wrote former NBA player Rex Chapman.

Slash also shared a post in memory of Newhart, writing “RIP #BobNewhart,” alongside an image of the comedian as Papa Elf in the 2003 Christmas movie Elf.
